What is Achilles Tendinopathy?

Achilles tendinopathy is a condition affecting the tendon that connects your calf muscles to your heel, causing pain, stiffness, or swelling. It typically develops gradually from overuse, sudden activity increases, or tight calf muscles. Pain is experienced at the back of the heel, and into the Achilles tendon. It can cause stiffness when beginning activity, and pain with prolonged activity.

Common Symptoms

  • Swelling or thickening of the tendon

  • Pain that worsens with activity, especially running or climbing stairs

  • Weakness or reduced power in your calf

  • Pain or stiffness along the back of your heel, especially in the morning or after resting

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Tight or weak calf muscles

  • Poor footwear or training on hard surfaces

  • Biomechanical issues (flat feet or high arches)

  • Age – tendon elasticity decreases naturally over time

  • Sudden increase in physical activity (running, jumping, or walking long distances)
